Hunting Trips of a Ranchman & The Wilderness Hunter

    Price: points - Details)

Written during his days as a ranchman in the Dakota Bad Lands, these two wilderness tales by Theodore Roosevelt endure today as part of the classic folklore of the West. The narratives provide vivid portraits of the land as well as the people and animals that inhabited it, underscoring Roosevelt’s abiding concerns as a naturalist.

Originally published in 1885, Hunting Trips of a Ranchman chronicles Roosevelt’s adventures tracking a twelve-hundred-pound grizzly bear in the pine forests of the Bighorn Mountains.  Yet some of the best sections are those in which Roosevelt muses on the beauty of the Bad Lands and the simple pleasures of ranch life.  The British Spectator said the book “could claim an honorable place on the same shelf as Walton’s Compleat Angler.”  The Wilderness Hunter, which came out in 1893, remains perhaps the most detailed account of the grizzly bear ever recorded.   Introduction by Stephen E. Ambrose.

How to Be a Good Duck Hunter

A good duck hunter knows, or rather, understands the duck. Only then can he manipulate the duck to capture it. You see, ducks have excellent color vision, contrary to the popular idea that they are color blind. They can also survey a wide visual area at one glance. This is due to the wide-set eyes on either side of the head that allows the duck to detect predators. The area best to blind to a duck will probably be the region just behind its head. It is not easy to hunt a duck, as its morphology is suited to the supreme vision and its natural learning capacity to work against hunters and other predators. Hence understanding a duck and its features helps the hunter take better decisions in duck hunting.

Choosing the perfect hunting location is as important as knowing the duck. The perfect location ensures a good flock size and also a successful hunt. The perfect locations are those that offer food, water, and seclusion to the ducks. The area should be calm and relaxing, assuring the ducks of a safe place to rest. Finding such an area would be a real treat for any duck hunter.

Ducks love swimming, and potential bodies of water you may find them in are drainage ditches, reservoirs, ponds, marshes, creeks, flooded plains or regions of the high waterfall, etc. A good idea is to ask locals about the different areas frequented by ducks. It is advised to search for new and unique locations that ducks frequent. This location might not be the same as the last season and may require a bit of intensive research on foot. Aerials images can also be relied upon for identifying water bodies. Adventurous hunters can use a GPS system to locate water bodies.

It is also necessary to understand the flight pattern timings, flock size, and feeding of the ducks. Flight patterns include the exact location of migration, and also other locations where a few ducks decide to inhabit for a few days. Weather also plays a major role in the success of a hunt. An intelligent hunter will always watch the flight of ducks a few days before hunting. From the flight, one can notice the direction of the bird movement, indicating a possibility of water in a particular direction.

Different flocks have different time intervals, so when observing, time of arrival, etc should also be considered. This allows proper planning of the duck hunt. Making a good duck call is also necessary to lure birds. A duck’s call mimics the sounds that ducks produce in the wild. There are various devices and methods that can produce a duck call, all of them producing similar results. Making duck calls with friends would create an illusion that there are multiple ducks in the area and be more inclined to approach if they feel safe. But, making too many duck calls not only makes the area seems chaotic but also drives away the birds. Thus a number of factors have to be considered before going on a hunting expedition to get successful results.

Bird Watching in Treasure Island Florida

Treasure Island, Florida is a wonderful place to observe some of the most magnificent wildlife in the country. Bird watching or birding is a very popular attraction to many people because of the variety of species that call these shores home. Actually, the area can serve as a good place to observe birds that may not be indigenous to the area. Many birds’ migration patterns run through this region. Some lovely shorebirds can be spotted along this stretch of coast and it is recommended that every birder take some time to enjoy these species.

There is also a collective effort in the community to make sure these birds last for future generations, so always make sure to be careful and never disturb these creatures’ natural habitats. Many of Florida’s species are on the brink of peril and people should always make sure to enjoy the wildlife, while making sure to preserve the natural order.

Laughing Gull – During a trip to Treasure Island, you will no doubt see plenty of gulls. These birds are everywhere and will do their best to acquire some of the lunch you have brought to the beach, so be careful. If you plan to feed the gulls, make sure to do it away from other beachgoers because these birds will flock around you and it may perturb the other guests of the beach.

Willet/Sandpiper – The Willet is another very common species that can be found along Treasure Island’s shores. This bird is part of the Sandpiper family and can be easily viewed combing the beach in search of food. The Willet’s population declined in the early twentieth century due to hunting but has increased since that time. While steadily increasing in population, the Willet is considered to still be somewhat at risk.

Black Skimmer – These birds are a beautiful sight and can be seen flying low over the waters and skimming the lower part of their bill into the water to catch food, which is how they got their name. The Black Skimmer has a black back with a white underside and is very distinct with their bright orange bill that has a black front edge.

Terns – There are 3 varieties of Tern that can be found around Treasure Island. The Royal Tern is an Orange-billed variety and can only be found near saltwater. The Royal Tern is found around Treasure Island in the winter months and does not breed in the area. The Gull-Billed Tern is also found along this stretch of coastal waters. These terns have a black bill and look similar to gulls, hence the name. This tern does breed in this area and can be found here in the summer months. Last but not least is the Least Tern is the smallest of the American tern varieties. These terns also breed in the area and can be found during the summer months.

American Oystercatcher – These birds breed in the area and can be found walking along the beach in search of food year-round. The bird is large for a shorebird and has a bright red bill and long legs. In the 19th century, they became locally extinct in the northeast due to hunting and egg-collecting, but then became protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.

Snowy Egret – This is a beautiful white heron that can be found around freshwater, as well as coastal regions like Treasure Island. This bird can be very easy to identify quickly because of their long black legs and yellow feet. The Snowy Egret has beautiful plumage during the breeding season; these birds were sought after by market hunters which depleted the population to a dangerous level. These birds became protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, as well.

Great Blue Heron – These birds can be found all over the country and are extremely common in Florida year-round. They can be found throughout the entire state around fresh and saltwater. They are the largest American herons and are tall with long legs. The Great Blue Heron will walk slowly in shallow water while searching for food until they dive their head quickly to snag fish.

Brown Pelican – Brown Pelicans can be found year-round in Treasure Island and are very distinct birds. Many tourists enjoy getting photos of these birds as they sit floating on the water or when they dive to catch fish. These pelicans are unique from the other 6 species because they are the only dark pelicans. They are also the only pelican that dives from the air into the water to catch their food.

White Ibis – These birds are found throughout the year in Treasure Island and are distinguished by their white body and bright red legs and bills. These birds also have black wingtips that usually only be seen while they are in flight. The White Ibis can be viewed while foraging along the coast for small crustaceans and crayfish.

Great Egret – This bird is also known as the Great White Heron or the Great White Egret. These birds are tall (up to 3.3 feet!) and all white with yellow bills. The Great Egret can be found in Treasure Island year-round and can be found feeding in shallow water on frogs, fish, and sometimes lizards. These birds are one of the most beautiful and majestic species that the Treasure Island area has to offer birders.

Underweight Hunting Dogs Can Have a Problem

If your hunting partner is an underweight dog, make sure he has the proper nutrition he needs to give you his hunting best. Hunting dogs are athletes. But, sometimes you can have an underweight dog. Their excellent work ethic and eager-to-please spirit make them the ideal partner for a variety of athletic endeavors.

Like human athletes, the nutritional requirements for active dogs must be adjusted to meet their unique needs. Due to their high activity levels and the strain placed on their body during hunts and trails, performance and hunting dogs require a superior level of nutrients and calories than the average house dog. It is not uncommon for hunting dogs to be on the thin side, and often a healthy, athletic hunter, may seem like an underweight dog compared to the same dog kept as just a pet. However, it is important to access your dog’s nutritional requirements and balance them with the proper diet to ensure optimum health and best performance.

Veterinarians use a standardized Body Condition Score (BCS) system to evaluate the condition of a dog’s overall health and ideal weight. The BCS scale is from 1-9, with 1 being malnourished and 9 being morbidly obese. As a general rule, the “ideal” range for the body condition score for dogs is between a 4 and 5. At this level, the dog should have ribs that can be easily felt under the skin, but not seen. The dogs should have a waist (a narrowing of their width behind the ribcage), as well as an abdomen that is “tucked up” when seen from the side.

In highly active, performance dogs, a BCS of 3 may be considered a healthy weight. These dogs have a high percentage of lean body mass, with ribs that can be slightly seen under the skin, and obviously felt. The very tips of their spine or pelvis bones may be discernable, and they have a waist. Dogs with a body condition score of 1 to 2 are underweight, and their diets and or performance demands must be adjusted. In these dogs, their ribs, hip, pelvic, and backbones can all be clearly seen, and a loss of muscle mass is evident. Dogs with a body condition score of 3 or less should be evaluated for possible diet changes, to provide more balanced, high-calorie nutrition for the dog. In dogs that are well-fed, but score persistently low on the BCS system, a veterinarian should be consulted to check for possible underlying medical problems, such as internal parasites that may be preventing the pet from absorbing the nutrients from his food.
